Packing for a trip used to make me crazy.
My brain would race with anxiety over having to anticipate EVERY POSSIBLE OUTFIT OUTCOME. Consequently, I traveled with a massive suitcase and way too many clothes and accessories.
It was during a trip to Bali a few years ago that I realized I'd only brought a carry-on. For 10 days of international travel. Over the years, I have slowly come to appreciate the liberty of packing light, and today, it's an obsession.
Even now, traveling with an almost three-month-old, I still carry these things...plus a little bit more (diapers take up A LOT of space). But when I'm traveling solo, it's light, light, baby.
This round-up of my travel essentials highlights the things I take with me no matter where I'm going.
1. Big, Blanket-Sized Scarf
This beauty is the Everlane Cashmere Scarf, and it's huge at 76" x 28". The scarf I travel with is an enormous silk one I found in a sample sale in DTLA. It is hands-down one of the best purchases I have ever made. Scarf, blanket, pillow – its multiple uses means you will definitely get your money's worth.
2. Lip Balm
I just discovered this made-in-korea tinted lip balm thanks to Cup of Jo and it's my new favorite. Without a lip balm nearby, my palms start to sweat and I get irritable. Consequently, I have either a ton of lip balms in my life, or none, because let's face it, that shit it easy to lose. This one is hanging around more than most, likely because of its adorable tin.
3. iPad mini with Logitech Case with Bluetooth Keyboard
When I first got the iPad mini, I was worried it would be too small. But I've come to love how light it is, and when it's paired with my keyboard case, it becomes a little laptop. I use it to read books and magazines, type long emails, and watch Netflix.
4. Super-Rich Hand Lotion
Like taking lotion from a baby (ugh), that's exactly what I've done here with Dr. Brown's Nutritive Baby Balm. My logic is that any product good, and vetted enough, for a baby's skin has got to be good for mine. It's got all the good stuff (essential oils, coconut oil, calendula) and none of the yuck (parabens, sulfate, petroleum). I initially bought it for S jr but confess to using it just as much on myself. It's lightweight, non-greasy, and smells really, really good. Whole truth? Papa uses it, too.
5. Light Carry-On
I just bought the Helium Titanium International Carry-On Expandable Spinner Trolley (longest luggage name ever) from Delsey* and I love it so very much. In fact, Corey used it on a recent trip to New York, and managed to fit five days worth of tall man clothes in it. He reports that the glide-y factor is so high, it's almost off the charts. I love how light it is, how well-designed, and the TSA-approved lock. Now, to do more international travel!
What is your must-have for a trip?
* As of publishing, we now own two of these fantastic suitcases. They ROCK.
